Closet Makeover with South Coast Organizers

Lifestyle Baton Rouge, Home June 15, 2020

For this Type A lady, there are few things that feel as good as walking into a well-organized and good looking space. There’s just something so satisfying about putting everything into its place…in more ways than one.

I’ve talked about spring cleaning your closet before, and while I typically enjoy taking on this task by myself as a way to chill out (see Type A), I knew I needed to enlist some extra help this past spring to really get my closet in order. Lucky for me, one of my friends from college, Sara Landry, started her own organizing business and is helping people across the Capital City (and Lafayette and New Orleans) get their…”stuff” together.

FOLLOW SOUTH COAST ORGANIZERS: Instagram | Facebook | Website

Through her company, South Coast Organizers, Sara offers a variety of different packages to help organize ANY space in your home or business.

STEP 1: PLANNING

All successful projects start with a well organized plan! Sara will coordinate the whole project from start to finish around your schedule – even a crazy and unpredictable one like mine. Our first step was a consultation where she came by to see my spaces and get a feel for what I wanted out of the project. One of my main goals was to consolidate my clothes that were spread out into random closets throughout our house and put them in a designated space.

Once she saw my space and stuff, she took measurements to know what types of containers we could use to get best organized. First, she identifies organizers you already have that can be repurposed for new uses in your closet. I appreciated how Sara doesn’t immediately tell me all these new things to buy right off top, and she is very creative on using different types of items you already own for storage. She likes to use what’s available before making purchasing suggestions. She will send you a detailed list of items for you to choose from and then purchases them all herself to use for the installation process.

STEP 2: PURGE + SORT

A major step to any organization project is purging what you don’t need or want anymore, so you are only spending time working with pieces that you are keeping. For this project, purging was the most important step, because I got rid of a ton of clothes to open up space in both my LSU closet and my main closet.

As we went through the clothes I decided I no longer needed (there was some counseling given by Sara during this process, especially when it came to my LSU closet), we sorted them into piles of what I was going to give away and what I was going to try and re-sell. If you have a variety of items, I suggest going one step further and sorting the giveaway items into piles specific to certain charities or community organizations who are in need of tailored pieces. Sara will also pack these items up and drop them off at the location for you. This is a HUGE help!

— SARA’S TOP FIVE ORGANIZATIONAL TIPS —

  1. GET RID OF IT – If you don’t absolutely love it or you haven’t worn it in for-ev-er, let your pieces to go to a home that will appreciate their value.
  2. MAXIMIZE SPACE – Use matching hangers, hat stands, boot hangers, etc. to see your items and cut down on wasted space.
  3. PUT IT ON DISPLAY – The more things you can SEE, the more things you will USE. This is wear my divided purse organizer and acrylic risers made a huge difference.
  4. USE BASKETS AND BINS – This is a great way to divide seasonal pieces that you don’t need every day and consolidate items that are for special use only.
  5. ENJOY YOUR SPACE – When everything has a place in your newly organized space, you will want to keep it that way instead of throwing everything on that random bedroom chair.

STEP 3: ORGANIZE

After you purge, then you organize! This is the fun part. Sara comes up with a specific plan to get everything to fit perfectly and neatly in your space.

For my specific spaces, her ideas during our planning session on what to use for organization were perfect!  Did you know that there are special hangers for your boots so you can get rid of all your old shoe boxes? Or, that there are display shoe boxes to keep your most prized kicks in great condition? Also, I can now finally see all of my hats with this cool hanger, and I already had these storage boxes that she consolidated and labeled for easy use!

She also sectioned my clothes into type of item and then color coordinated from there. I already had these matching hangers, but I would highly suggest investing in a set you like as they give you a lot more space to work with when everything is matching.

clost-makeover-organization

SIDENOTE – Not only is Sara a fabulous professional organizer, but she is also a fabulously funny and entertaining lady. Add a couple of cocktails and a ton of laughs, and the whole process is basically hanging out with a college girlfriend who is getting you and your…”stuff” together 🙂

I am SO happy with how my closets turned out and am very impressed with Sara’s whole process from start to finish! I found some other spaces that I would like to have Sara come back and organize so everything in my house can feel as neatly organized as my closets. If you have any questions about my specific project and organization plan, please feel free to reach out! I have a feeling Sara will be back in our house again soon.

Thank you to Sara and South Coast Organizers for partnering up for this post and to Jordan Hefler for the beautiful photos!

LSU Game Day Outfits: November Sideline Style

Gameday, Style Gameday Outfits, LSU, Outfits, Sideline Style December 5, 2019

Well, November was a fun month for the LSU Football Team! We finished the regular season undefeated with a perfect record of 12-0. On the way to a perfect regular season, our players and team set records left and right and are still rewriting the LSU Football history books. It is an unbelievable feeling to see all of the hard work our players, coaches and support staff have put into this program become something historical. It really means so much.

Even though the regular season is over, we still have to get our gameday outfits ready for the post-season! And, to me, that means fancy, a little more over the top and possibly some sparkle, because we are headed to the SEC Championship this weekend AND have more games to play after that!

GAMEDAY | Away Game Travel Essentials

Gameday, Lifestyle Travel November 7, 2019

We are on the GEAUX again this weekend for one of the biggest college football games of the year! This is my fourth season traveling with the team, and it is one of the coolest experiences I have with this team and athletics staff.

When we headed to Tuscaloosa two years ago, I wrote a post on how to pack for an away game, and this year I’m sharing some of my newest favorite items to bring along.

1. LO & SONS BACKPACK

We get a new team-issued Nike backpack each year, so I’ve always traveled with a backpack as my carryon for team flights and travel in general. I find it to be the easiest, most comfortable and most efficient way to tote stuff around. I wanted to upgrade to a more adult/professional version of the backpack this year, so I bought this one from Lo & Sons. It has multiple pockets for organization and the backpack itself is pretty light. You can also take off the straps and make it a tote. I am very pleased with my investment (especially since I bought it at a discount), and I use it every day for work and on any of my other travel trips.

2. PORTABLE PILL ORGANIZER

This little box has been a game changer! I bought this portable pill organizer from Amazon a couple of years ago with the intention of using it for travel, and now I use it every single day. It stays with me at all times in my purse and I’m not having to carry around bulky bottles. You never know how you might feel on a trip, so I stock mine with Tylenol, Zyrtec, Benadryl…you name it! My little organizer has proven very beneficial on every trip.

3. TRAVEL TOILETRIES

I keep my toiletries bag fully packed throughout the entire football season and afterwards. I have mini sizes of everyday products that I use, hair ties, toothbrush, etc. and I try to refill it after every trip so it’s ready to go for the next one. This is an easy way to eliminate extra time and decisions when it comes to packing. Since I’m the world’s worst packer, I need distractions at an ultimate minimum!

This football season I am working with local haircare line Lubricity Labs whose products focus on managing frizz. Not only do Louisiana Ladies deal with constant frizz, but all the places we travel to for games are in the South, so I need to be frizz-free on the geaux as well! My travel sized bottles are perfect for away games.

(Since I have been using this shampoo and this conditioner, I can tell a noticeable difference in how long it takes my hair to air dry and how my curls are not so out of control!)

4. CROSSBODY BAG

Just like a backpack, a crossbody bag is the way to GEAUX when you’re on a trip. Traveling is made much easier when you are hands-free. My trusty Henri Bendel crossbody is no longer available, but I found a few new options for this season, like the Trinity Bag by Jon Hart. This style offers three bags in one, which is perfect for the girl on the GEAUX! It helps to organize your carryon items into the different bags for easy access plus one of the bags is clear so you are already stadium-approved for gameday! One of my favorite parts of this purse is that it is completely customizable from the color of each bag to the monogram you choose.

5. HAND SANITIZER + HAND WIPES

I typically feel a little icky when I am on a plane, and I always have to wash any clothes that I wore on a plane and sanitize my hands non-stop. This hand sanitizer smells like Whole Foods, and every time I use it, someone from a different row on the plane will smell it and ask me for some! I also love these hand towelettes that come in a variety of different scents. I pack these in my toiletry bag, purse and backpack so I can use them at all times. After I wipe them on my hands, I wipe off the area around me.

I would love to hear if there are any travel essentials you use that are super helpful when you are on the GEAUX! We only have two regular season away games left and at least a bowl game…but hopefully more than that!!

LSU Game Day Outfits: October Sideline Style

Gameday, Style Gameday Outfits, LSU, Outfits, Sideline Style October 31, 2019

It was another exciting month for the LSU Tigers! We went into our second bye week of the season undefeated at 8-0 and moved into the top spot of the AP rankings. We still have a lot of football left to play this season, so I don’t like to look ahead too much, but these past two months sure have been special!

Before our trip to Mississippi State, I created THE LSU GAMEDAY SHOP where I collect all the purple, gold and tiger print clothes and accessories on the internet and put them in one place for Tiger fans to shop! I had so much fun putting this together, and I update it a couple of times a week with new items and remove out of stock items.

When it comes to LSU game day outfits, I feel like I had a pretty strong month in October. I loved the tiger print skirt that I wore to the Florida game, and I wore these Millie Mae Collection earrings for three out of four games this past month. (For the other game I wore this pair from the same collection.) All of her designs are offered in a variety of colors, and I find them to be very lightweight and stylish. You can shop the collection with a 15% off discount using the code “emilydixon15” (case sensitive). I was also gifted my first set of BuDha Girl bangles from one of my favorite local shops, Simply Chic Boutique, and I now know what the hype is all about surrounding this brand. They are a little pricy, BUT you get nine bangles in a set and they are weightless, soundless and waterproof. I think they are a great accessory investment.

As always, thanks for following along! If you need some more LSU game day outfit inspo, you can find last month’s gameday outfits in my SEPTEMBER SIDELINE STYLE post!

LSU Game Day Outfits: September Sideline Style

Gameday, Style Gameday Outfits, LSU, Outfits, Sideline Style September 29, 2019

It’s the end of September and the Tigers are 4-0 after putting together a historical month of LSU Football. LSU has scored more points than any other team in the country through four games, AND they have scored more points through four games than any other team in SEC history. Seriously impressive. I also got to see LSU beat the Longhorns in my home state of Texas and check off another SEC stadium when we went to Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN.

I have a few highlights from my sideline style and LSU game day outfits this September, including my Mimosa Handcrafted tiger cuff to pair with my tiger pendant and tiger earrings (I think I need the tiger ring now too!). I am constantly wearing these pieces on repeat. I found my newest favorite pants to wear on the sidelines, in the office and everywhere in between. I was introduced to some new jewelry brands like Lisi Lerch and the Millie Mae Collection and instantly fell in love with their gameday pieces.

As always, you can find all of my LSU game day outfits on my Instagram each week as I put them together, and I save them in a “gameday outfits” highlight over there too. I also introduce you to new game day brands and pieces as I find them throughout the season in real time in my LSU Gameday shop, so if you need some tips, I got ya covered over there!
