Football is a huge part of LSU, but it is not the only thing going on around campus. I know I tend to get caught up in my own little football bubble, so this spring I am setting out to re-explore our beautiful campus. This university is rich in tradition and you see that in every corner of campus. Even though you can’t attend a game in Tiger Stadium right now, here’s a little lagniappe for you. I have five things for you to do at LSU this spring.
1. LSU AGCENTER DAIRY STORE
This is one of my favorite hidden gems on campus. The LSU AgCenter Dairy Store offers a variety of ice cream flavors made with the milk from cows who live on LSU’s campus. LSU is an agricultural and mechanical university, and you get to reap those benefits at the Dairy Store. There are around 15 flavors to choose from including Tiger Bite and my personal favorite – mint chocolate chip. The Dairy Store also sells coffee, espresso, smoothies, chips, soft drinks, cookies and candy.
2. LSU SPRING SPORTS
LSU Baseball games are almost as big of a production as football games, except there are sooooo many of them in the spring. Baseball fans are crazy about the Tigers and home stands are weekend-long events. When SEC play gets going, Alex Box really gets rocking and you will see the same type of tailgating that goes on in the fall. Besides having one of the best teams in the country year in and year out, Shea and I go for the crawfish pies and chicken tenders. We seriously have the best ballpark food out there.
Right behind the Box, you can also catch a game at Tiger Park where LSU Softball Head Coach Beth Torina has another top-ranked Tigers team. Right across the street from softball, our LSU Gymnastics team sells out the PMAC for their meets, and yes, are also one of the top teams in the country. LSU really competes in the spring!
As I write this blog post, LSU Baseball is ranked No. 5 in the country – LSU Softball is ranked No. 7 in the country – LSU Gymnastics is ranked No. 2 in the country. Talk about impressive!
3. PICNIC ON THE PARADE GROUND
The Parade Ground offers one of the prettiest views of campus lined with old oak trees and the Memorial Tower on one end and the LSU Law School across the street on the other. LSU was originally a military school and this open grassy area was built for soldiers to conduct drill practice. When Shea and I first started dating we would picnic and read out there when I didn’t work on campus. It is a great place to catch a quick cat nap or relax and get some sun.
4. RUN, WALK, BIKE RIDE OR SKIP THE LSU LAKES
I didn’t realize how much I missed the LSU lakes until I moved back to Baton Rouge after college. Whether I was thinking about switching jobs, having a bad day (or having a great day), feeling stressed out or whatever, the lakes became my favorite place of solitude. I feel like I know all of the different loops like the back of my hand, and there are very few better feelings than finishing a great run out there. The best part is, depending on which loop you run, you get to see various parts of campus and the area surrounding LSU. How do you make this even better? Bring a puppy!! Lace up your kicks and get out there!
5. LSU FOOTBALL SPRING GAME
Y’all know I couldn’t get through an entire list without adding at least one football related event. This year’s LSU Spring Game is on April 22 and for the first time since I have been going to these games, it will be held at night. That means we only have two short months to wait for Saturday night in Death Valley. Admission is free and it is the first time fans will get to see the new coaching staff in action. You can find more information about the National L Club Spring Game on LSUsports.net.
This is only a sampling of all the things you can do on LSU’s campus throughout the spring. These pictures were taken on the Mississippi River levee right by the LSU Football Operations building. It is a beautiful view of the river and you can run straight downtown…to catch a happy hour that you earned by running all of those miles.
What are your favorite things to do around LSU’s campus? Let me know if there is something you do that I should try!
