Baton Rouge

Closet Makeover with South Coast Organizers

Lifestyle Baton Rouge, Home June 15, 2020

For this Type A lady, there are few things that feel as good as walking into a well-organized and good looking space. There’s just something so satisfying about putting everything into its place…in more ways than one.

I’ve talked about spring cleaning your closet before, and while I typically enjoy taking on this task by myself as a way to chill out (see Type A), I knew I needed to enlist some extra help this past spring to really get my closet in order. Lucky for me, one of my friends from college, Sara Landry, started her own organizing business and is helping people across the Capital City (and Lafayette and New Orleans) get their…”stuff” together.

FOLLOW SOUTH COAST ORGANIZERS: Instagram | Facebook | Website

Through her company, South Coast Organizers, Sara offers a variety of different packages to help organize ANY space in your home or business.

STEP 1: PLANNING

All successful projects start with a well organized plan! Sara will coordinate the whole project from start to finish around your schedule – even a crazy and unpredictable one like mine. Our first step was a consultation where she came by to see my spaces and get a feel for what I wanted out of the project. One of my main goals was to consolidate my clothes that were spread out into random closets throughout our house and put them in a designated space.

Once she saw my space and stuff, she took measurements to know what types of containers we could use to get best organized. First, she identifies organizers you already have that can be repurposed for new uses in your closet. I appreciated how Sara doesn’t immediately tell me all these new things to buy right off top, and she is very creative on using different types of items you already own for storage. She likes to use what’s available before making purchasing suggestions. She will send you a detailed list of items for you to choose from and then purchases them all herself to use for the installation process.

STEP 2: PURGE + SORT

A major step to any organization project is purging what you don’t need or want anymore, so you are only spending time working with pieces that you are keeping. For this project, purging was the most important step, because I got rid of a ton of clothes to open up space in both my LSU closet and my main closet.

As we went through the clothes I decided I no longer needed (there was some counseling given by Sara during this process, especially when it came to my LSU closet), we sorted them into piles of what I was going to give away and what I was going to try and re-sell. If you have a variety of items, I suggest going one step further and sorting the giveaway items into piles specific to certain charities or community organizations who are in need of tailored pieces. Sara will also pack these items up and drop them off at the location for you. This is a HUGE help!

— SARA’S TOP FIVE ORGANIZATIONAL TIPS —

  1. GET RID OF IT – If you don’t absolutely love it or you haven’t worn it in for-ev-er, let your pieces to go to a home that will appreciate their value.
  2. MAXIMIZE SPACE – Use matching hangers, hat stands, boot hangers, etc. to see your items and cut down on wasted space.
  3. PUT IT ON DISPLAY – The more things you can SEE, the more things you will USE. This is wear my divided purse organizer and acrylic risers made a huge difference.
  4. USE BASKETS AND BINS – This is a great way to divide seasonal pieces that you don’t need every day and consolidate items that are for special use only.
  5. ENJOY YOUR SPACE – When everything has a place in your newly organized space, you will want to keep it that way instead of throwing everything on that random bedroom chair.

STEP 3: ORGANIZE

After you purge, then you organize! This is the fun part. Sara comes up with a specific plan to get everything to fit perfectly and neatly in your space.

For my specific spaces, her ideas during our planning session on what to use for organization were perfect!  Did you know that there are special hangers for your boots so you can get rid of all your old shoe boxes? Or, that there are display shoe boxes to keep your most prized kicks in great condition? Also, I can now finally see all of my hats with this cool hanger, and I already had these storage boxes that she consolidated and labeled for easy use!

She also sectioned my clothes into type of item and then color coordinated from there. I already had these matching hangers, but I would highly suggest investing in a set you like as they give you a lot more space to work with when everything is matching.

clost-makeover-organization

SIDENOTE – Not only is Sara a fabulous professional organizer, but she is also a fabulously funny and entertaining lady. Add a couple of cocktails and a ton of laughs, and the whole process is basically hanging out with a college girlfriend who is getting you and your…”stuff” together 🙂

I am SO happy with how my closets turned out and am very impressed with Sara’s whole process from start to finish! I found some other spaces that I would like to have Sara come back and organize so everything in my house can feel as neatly organized as my closets. If you have any questions about my specific project and organization plan, please feel free to reach out! I have a feeling Sara will be back in our house again soon.

Thank you to Sara and South Coast Organizers for partnering up for this post and to Jordan Hefler for the beautiful photos!

Five Ways You Can Help Companion Animal Alliance

Live Local Baton Rouge, Pets April 29, 2019

Y’all know I’m all about saving the puppies! I’m teaming up with some other locals and Companion Animal Alliance this summer to spread the word about CAA and get others involved at the shelter so we can keep caring for and saving animals in Baton Rouge!

If you aren’t in the market to adopt an additional family member, there are still many ways you can help out your local animal shelter. So, until I can have my dream ranch with an unlimited amount of puppies on it (a girl can dream, right?!), these are five of the other ways WE can help Companion Animal Alliance.

IF YOU DON’T LIVE IN BATON ROUGE, YOU CAN STILL DO EACH OF THESE THINGS BY GETTING INVOLVED WITH YOUR LOCAL SHELTER!

I commonly hear, “I can’t go into the shelter…it just makes me so sad.”, “There’s no way I could see those dogs like that.”, “I would want to adopt them all if I went, so I better stay away.”, etc. Well, what you see in the shelter might be sad, but isn’t it more sad to think that you could help make a difference for these animals and our community and you aren’t? Isn’t it sad to think that in many circumstances humans have already failed these animals, and you are too sad to help them? Of course it is sad to see to this, but if we don’t see it, then how do we expect the situation to change?

1. VOLUNTEER

Volunteers are the heartbeat of every animal shelter and animal rescue in general. Without volunteers, it wouldn’t be possible to save as many animals as CAA currently does. The new shelter, located on LSU’s campus, has changed the game when it comes to how you can help out. It is centrally located in town, it’s easy to get to and is full of new amenities and ways to help. It doesn’t matter how much or how little time you have to volunteer or what you can do, because every minute and every task count.

INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING? YOU CAN FILL OUT THE VOLUNTEER APPLICATION HERE.

Once you go through a quick orientation, you can volunteer in a variety of ways at the shelter, including CAA’s new program called “Date a Dog”. You can check out a pup for a fun day around town, or if your time is more limited, you can walk a pup around the dog park located at the shelter or for a quick walk around campus. This makes the dogs so happy to get out of the shelter, even if it is for just a brief period of time.

YOU CAN REGISTER FOR NEW VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION HERE.

Whether volunteers want to work hands-on with the animals or prefer office jobs and yard work, it’s all important to CAA and it’s vital to keep the shelter running!

2. ATTEND EVENTS

Who doesn’t want to attend fun events around Baton Rouge while also helping animals in need at the same time?! This is literally the definition of a win-win situation. Companion Animal Alliance has a calendar full of events going on around the Capital City throughout the year that directly impact the shelter. These include the Cap City Beer Fest, Fur Ball, multiple Yappy Hours at the Bulldog and now the FURRY FUN RUN!

CHECK OUT CAA’s FACEBOOK PAGE AND THEIR CALENDAR TO FIND OUT ABOUT NEW EVENTS!

3. DONATE

Did you know that donating only $5/month gives treats to one dog for an ENTIRE MONTH? One of your monthly coffees can make a puppy happy and full for 30 days. CAA has a variety of ways to donate based on your budget. You can be a reoccurring donor at any price, a one-time donor and even pick certain areas at CAA to donate your funds.

BECOME A CAA MEMBER BY SIGNING UP HERE!

Of course the first thing that comes to mind when you hear ‘donating’ is money, but there are multiple other ways to donate to CAA! You can donate your time through volunteering, and you can donate household items to keep the pups comfortable and cut down on costs for the shelter. A couple of times a year, I pick up a bunch of $5 blankets at Walmart to donate. And, don’t throw away your old sheets and towels around the house, the shelter can put those to good use too!

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE VARIOUS WAYS YOU CAN DONATE TO CAA HERE!

Also, you can donate while making your regular amazon orders! While shopping on amazon, if you use this specific link to shop through AMAZON SMILE, a portion of your purchase is directly donated to CAA. Also, CAA has an AMAZON WISHLIST set up, so you can easily donate items without even leaving your house!

4. SHARE ON SOCIAL

Social media is a HUGE asset to animal shelters and rescue groups across the country and has definitely played a role in the rising success rates of saving animals. By sharing adoptable animals through various social media channels, there are more eyes on each animal and more people become connected.

I feature an adoptable CAA pup each week on my Instagram page, and so far, we have a 100% success rate of finding these animals their furever homes. Of course, this success isn’t only because of my posts, but the posts get shared to a whole new audience, others see these available animals and tell their friends who might be looking, and the reach of CAA directly grows.

FOLLOW CAA ON: FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM | TWITTER

Through this new campaign we are launching, we are not only spreading the word on social about adoptable animals, but we are also sharing how to get involved with the shelter if you can’t adopt. Social media is key to getting our message out to the public. It’s quick and easy to share an adoptable animal from any of CCA’s social pages on to your personal page. You never know when a connection could be made!

5. FOSTER

Without fosters, shelters wouldn’t be able to save as many animals as they currently do. In the South, especially, shelters can reach capacity fairly quickly, and the only way to continue bringing more needy animals in is for other animals to either leave the shelter due to adoption or fostering.

Fostering allows kennels to open up for other animals in need and is another vital piece to the success of a shelter. Fostering is a bigger commitment than my list above, but CAA will work with you depending on your schedule. You can even be a weekend foster if that’s all your schedule allows. Even a couple of days outside of the shelter is extremely beneficial for these animals.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FOSTERING PROCESS HERE!

I can’t tell you how great of a feeling it is knowing that not only are we working together to save the lives of animals in need, but we are also matching people with pets that will provide such wonderful lifelong relationships. I can’t imagine not coming home to my dogs each day, and I think everyone…and every dog…should have the opportunity to have a relationship this strong and important!

WANT TO LEARN EVEN MORE? My blogger friend Leslie is also joining me for this new campaign, and she gives you 11 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT COMPANION ANIMAL ALLIANCE over on her blog, Southern Flair.

PS | ALL of the pups featured in this post have been ADOPTED through Companion Animal Alliance!

Everyone wants to be a winner on gameday, so you might as well start the day out in the right direction with a winning LSU gameday outfit!

Putting together gameday outfits has easily become one of my favorite hobbies, and I like to shop for items throughout the year to wear for games during the fall. I get a lot of questions about where I purchase my clothes and accessories that I wear on the sidelines, so I thought I would put everything in one place to help you shop all throughout football season!

Also, new in 2019 is THE GAMEDAY SHOP! THE GAMEDAY SHOP is a place specifically designed for LSU fans to directly shop for all things purple, gold and tiger print, so you can cheer on the Tigers in style. THE GAMEDAY SHOP will be updated as items go out of stock and when I find new pieces to add to each category, so be sure to visit it here!

SWEET BATON ROUGE

Sweet Baton Rouge is a local brand that is constantly putting out Louisiana themed t-shirts and gear throughout the year that represent our Southern pride, and they have a section of inventory devoted specifically to LSU Gameday. I’ve worked with the Sweet Baton Rouge team multiple times (find more gameday options here and here + some Baton Rouge love here) and am excited to show off some of their newest designs for the upcoming football season!

They describe their LSU gameday tees as “Death Valley approved”, and I definitely agree! I know there are a lot of t-shirt brands to choose from, but I continue to work with Sweet Baton Rouge because of their creative designs, extremely comfortable pieces and exceptional quality.

— SHOP CLEAR BAGS FOR YOUR LSU GAMEDAY LOOK —

I’ve written a few posts on shopping for clear bags (see here and here) that I might even call myself an expert on the topic! When it comes to style, a lot has changed on the clear bag front with designers producing cute clear bags each year that can easily transition after gameday. Also, don’t forget that clear bags are not only using for football games and all other LSU Athletics events, but they are also needed for concerts, professional games and other events in venues that follow a clear bag policy.

Many of the local shops I listed above carry a variety of clear bags here in Baton Rouge.

SAAVYROOT | I think SAAVYROOT was the first designer to come out with a stylish clear bag as soon as LSU’s Geaux Clear policy came out. A few years later and she now offer bags in multiple colors for LSU and Saints games.

GEAUX CLEAR COLLECTION | The name of the company says it all and their motto is “style that wins”. Created by an LSU alum, these bags get a makeover each year with new styles added to the inventory. Check out their Fall 2019 collection here.

JON HART DESIGN | I grew up toting around Jon Hart pieces, so it made sense that I had to have a clear bag by them. Well, I ended up with a couple of their clear bags! They sent me their clear becky bag designed specifically for LSU last year and now offer team logos from across the country and bag colors to match any university. I also recently picked up their Trinity bag that is three-bags-in-one including a clear bag!

HAMPTON ROAD DESIGNS | This is a new clear bag brand I was introduced to this year, and I am excited to style their pieces for this football season. You pick your clear bag and can interchange straps to match your team or whatever look you are going for. Shop the collection with a 20% OFF DISCOUNT + FREE SHIPPING using the code “GeauxTigers” (case sensitive) through November 17, 2019.

REMEMBER – LSU fans must Geaux Clear for ALL athletics events, not just football, so you need to invest in a clear bag to create your perfect gameday outfit!

— SHOP FOR YOUR GAMEDAY —

Clearly, my gameday outfits focus on purple and gold, but a lot of my favorite gameday items also have options to personalize for your own specific school. From jewelry to dresses, you can represent your university by buying items from the brands below in your team’s colors. These are my favorite places to shop for LSU items, as well as shop by color. I’ve done separate blog posts for quite a few of these brands that I linked below, but here is also a quick list of brands/stores.

KENDRA SCOTT | Kendra Scott is probably the easiest accessory brand to shop by your preferred team color, and they so many options for each university.

Now, the brand carries more colors, including a perfect LSU purple, to wear on gameday! There’s a very good chance that there are available styles in your team’s colors too.

I will share more about the brand soon, but until then, you can shop with a 20% OFF DISCOUNT using the code “EDIXON20” (case sensitive) throughout the 2019 season. I picked out this reversible tank, this t-shirt, this dress and this casual tee to wear for the upcoming season.

LISI LERCH | I have no clue how it took me so long to discover this jewelry brand, but they have so many cute earrings, necklaces and other accessories that will take your gameday outfit to the next level. Their grape color and gold pieces are perfect for LSU fans, but they also offer every other color imaginable for your specific school.

MILLIE MAE COLLECTION | The designer behind Millie Mae reached out to me earlier this season, and I was so impressed with the style and quality of these earrings. I have been sharing them over on Instagram all season, but my favorites are the Sara earrings in yellow, the Katie earrings in purple and the Evie earrings in purple. In all honestly, I want the entire collection. Shop the collection with a 15% OFF DISCOUNT using the code “emilydixon15” (case sensitive).

Live Local | A Dog-Friendly Capital City

Live Local Baton Rouge, Louisiana October 26, 2017

It is SO hard for me to leave my house when I see all three of my dogs looking at me with those literal puppy eyes. I wish I could take with me them everywhere at all hours of the day, but unfortunately that is not looked upon too highly at my office. Seriously though, when is ‘take your pet to work day’ going to become a thing?! When it comes to the weekends and days off, I want to spend as much time as I can with my three main girls, and sometimes that means they accompany Shea and me around Baton Rouge.

So, if you are like me and enjoy your pups tagging along, this post is for you! I put together some of my favorite dog-friendly places where you can eat and play with your furry friends right here in the Capital City. This is by no means an extensive list of the only places you can hang with your best four-legged friends in Baton Rouge – just some of my personal favorites and places on my list to check out. If there is a spot you love to take your pups, please let me know in the comments below so I can continue to add to this list and further Chuy, Gracie and Jones’ out of the house experiences. Thank you in advance!

Live Local | My Favorite Cocktails in Baton Rouge

EVD Favorites, Live Local Baton Rouge, Food + Drink September 11, 2017

Who doesn’t enjoy a good cocktail? Now that the weather is getting pretty here in South Louisiana, you can’t get much better than an evening on the porch listening to live music and sipping a signature drink. And when the weather is nice here, you have to take advantage of it.

Don’t worry, I have done all of the grueling research for you and found the best (or at least my favorite) cocktails in the Capital City. Seriously, it’s no big deal. You’re welcome! I was happy to put this post together for you.

MERCHANT MULE

The Overpass Merchant | 2904 Perkins Road

One of my all-time favorite cocktails is a Moscow Mule, and the bartenders at The Overpass Merchant have put their own spin on this classic cocktail. Instead of using vodka, their house drink is made with Irish whiskey – plus it’s frozen. So, it’s pretty much a cocktail in the form of an Icee garnished with some fresh mint in a chilled copper mug. Need any more convincing?

MISSISSIPPI MAGNOLIA

Bin 77 Bistro & Wine | 10111 Perkins Rowe

The Mississippi Magnolia at Bin 77 is the perfect cocktail for these hot Louisiana days. It is a light and delicious pairing of honeysuckle vodka with fresh lemon and ginger root. The ginger is my favorite part of this drink. It’s topped off with a splash of soda making it the ultimate refresher.

THE PAINKILLER

The Rum House | 2112 Perkins Palm Avenue

The Painkiller is an original recipe cocktail at the Rum House Caribbean Taqueria. It is a concoction of rum, pineapple juice, a splash of orange juice and cream of coconut. So, basically a dessert on ice. It’s garnished with grated nutmeg, and you pretty much feel like you are on island time. It’s delicious and can be found in Baton Rouge AND New Orleans.

MARGARITA

Superior Grill | 5435 Government Street

If you are a fan of the margarita, you absolutely can’t go wrong at Superior Grill. At most restaurants I can enjoy a couple of margaritas during a long meal, but at Superior you only need one. For real. I typically get my margarita on the rocks everywhere else, but the frozen marg with no salt is my favorite option here. Also, I love a drink in a styrofoam cup for some reason.

FROSE ALL DAY

BRQ Seafood and Barbecue | 10423 Jefferson Highway

If you think rose all day is good, then you will love BRQ’s frose all day. This is basically a grown-up Icee (again!) made with rose wine blended with seasonal fruit and a little kick. The best part is, they are only $5 on Thursdays!

If you are looking for a Happy Hour to try out some of these cocktails, my blogger friend Leslie from Southern Flair Blog started a Happy Hour Club. If there is one club to be a part of, it’s this one and everyone is welcome! Each month she finds a new place around town that offers drink specials for ladies to get together and meet new people. I went to the inaugural Happy Hour Club and had such a fun time getting to know some new people in the city. If you follow her Facebook page or through her newsletter, you can see which spot she sets up at each month. Cheers!
